This week`s Wino Wednesday with Jason Bran of Happy Songs featuring SAKE!

  • Kikusui Funaguchi....sake in a can!  It is a sake that is not pasteurized so it is still fermenting. The can protects it from light and heat and allows it to age without damaging the flavors. After 3 months it is similar to brandy, and it is the smoothest 19$ alcohol you will ever have.
  • Tsukasabotan Senchu Hassaku Junmai - An awesome crisp sry sake that has flavor notes of Banana and marshmallow. You have never had a sake like this!
  • Kudokijozu junmai ginjo - This sake is super rare! Jason`s the only person in town who sells this!.

Women Winemakers from Around the World

Casa Lapostolle
Alexandra Marnier
Casa Lapostolle Merlot 2005
Chile

Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle is the Chairperson of Casa Lapostolle, a winery that has gained worldwide recognition for its highly acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc from Chile. Alexandra is also the great granddaughter of the founder of Grand Marnier, the famed French liqueur. Grand Marnier has been a privately held family owned business since 1827. The marriage of Alexandra`s great grandparents created the family name, Marnier-Lapostolle. Marnier was derived from the wine producing family from the Loire Valley and Lapostolle was derived from the spirits producing family. The Marnier family has been active in French winemaking since the 17th century."

In the early 1990`s, Alexandra was placed in charge of company diversification. After months of research, she decided to externally expand the family`s wine position and chose Chile. This led her to design and develop the Casa Lapostolle winery in 1994. Alexandra is considered the pioneer of fine wine production in Chile and has raised the level of quality from this winemaking region. The Rapel Valley is one of the hotter wine regions of Chile and is known for producing full red wines. Casa Lapostolle Merlot has what is considered typical aromas: ripe blackberry, plum, black pepper, earth and a pinch of roasted green bell pepper. The nose also picks up elements of boysenberry, mulberry and spice. The first thing you recognize on the palate is a very smooth texture, carrying a ripe, and spicy vanilla. The flavors are similar to what`s found on the nose -- mulberry, blackberry -- and are backed by mild to medium acidity and mild tannins. The finish is very earthy and a touch hot. Overall it is a very flavorful wine with good complexity.

Chateau La Lagune
Madame Jeanne Boyle, Caroline Desvergnes, Caroline Frey
Moulin La Lagune 1995
France(Bordeaux)

Chateau La Lagune once known as Grand La Lagune, begins in at least the 17th Century. Driving north from Bordeaux through the Médoc, along the D2, La Lagune is the first estate that you meet, and for this reason it is sometimes light-heartedly referred to as the premier grand cru of the region. Built in 1715, the Chateau La Lagune is more than one of the most illustrious wine estates in Bordeaux. It also has a notable history of dynamic women winemakers. In 1964, Madame Jeanne Boyle became estate manager of this venerable property and took decisive action. She replanted the entire vineyard so that the rows would be spaced at a distance that would insure higher quality. She also earned recognition as the first woman cellar master in Bordeaux. Today the estate is in the ownership of the Frey family, who acquired Champagne Ayala (and thus La Lagune) in 2000, subsequently selling the Champagne house to Bollinger.  Caroline Frey was installed as winemaker, continuing a fine tradition at La Lagune of women winemakers starting with Jeanne Boyle and then succeeded by her daughter, Caroline Desvergnes, who had been working on the estate since 1972. Today, another creative woman occupies a position of power at Chateau La Lagune. Enologist Caroline Frey seeks to balance tradition with the latest technical innovations to make outstanding wines. But then, she is used to formidable challenges. Until the age of 22, Caroline was a champion member of France`s competitive horse-jumping team. At 27, Frey doesn`t back away from intense competition. "I never thought I couldn`t win a competition because women and men compete together. I always wanted to win," she says. And she is emphatic that "Today, women know enology as well as men, and like men, they all do their best to produce an excellent wine. Winemaking has nothing to do with genetics and X or Y chromosomes."

Caroline`s confidence and talent is expressed in the strong quality of her wines made from vines that are 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. There are 33,000 cases produced every year of the Chateau La Lagune, while 8000 cases are produced of the Moulin La Lagune. The wines created here have been described as "big", "tannic", and (ironically perhaps) "masculine." It’s glorious 2005 has soft, sweet, ripe blackcurrant and black cherry fruit which blossoms within a lovely fragrant Margaux-style freshness and racy acidity. With lovely concentration, elegance and poise this should be a terrific bargain and looks sure to rival if not surpass their fabulous 1982.

Revana Family
Heidi Peterson Barrett
Revana 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon
United States

Located in the heart of Napa Valley, Revana Family Vineyard is a vineyard and winery estate focused on producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. For Dr. Madaiah Revana, it is the culmination of his dream to grow and craft wines of exceptional quality.

In 1997, while visiting the Napa Valley, Dr. Revana discovered a small parcel of prime vineyard land just north of the town of St. Helena. He immediately sensed the property’s potential. The area was already known for producing some of the world’s most sought after Cabernet Sauvignon. Jim Barbour clearly stood out among the many talented Napa Valley vineyard managers, and Dr. Revana asked him to develop and care for his property. Barbour then introduced Dr. Revana to winemaker Heidi Peterson Barrett, who is widely considered one of California’s greatest winemakers. Heidi Peterson Barrett grew up in the Napa Valley in a winemaking family and was destined to become one of California`s leading winemakers. It is said that winemaking is a combination of science and art. With a scientist-winemaker father and an artist mother it is no big surprise that Heidi was drawn to the wine industry.

Through high school, she spent her summers in wineries and vineyards, taking on all jobs from sorting vine cuttings to bottling line work. She then continued her winemaking education at UC Davis. After graduating from UC Davis in 1980 with a B.S. Degree in Fermentation Science, she went to work for Justin Meyer at Franciscan Vineyards and Silver Oak. After subsequent crush jobs at both Lindeman`s Wines in Australia and Rutherford Hill, in 1981 Heidi became assistant winemaker to Jerry Luper at Bouchaine Vineyards. Then in 1983, at age 25 became winemaker at Buehler Vineyards. In 1988, she left Buehler to become an independent winemaker (freelance), making wine for a number of small wineries. Within a week she was hired by Gustav Dalle Valle and was winemaker at Dalle Valle Vineyards until spring 1996 where she produced the famous "Maya" wine, a proprietary Cabernet blend that received two perfect 100 point scores from Robert Parker ( the `92 and `93). She started making wine for Screaming Eagle in 1992, which has also received two perfect 100 pt scores (the `92 and recent `97). A 6-liter bottle of `92 SE set a world record for the highest price ever paid for a single bottle of wine at the 2000 Napa Valley Wine Auction selling for $500,000. Since 1988 she has developed a stellar client list of super and ultra-premium wineries. She is currently winemaker for La Sirena, Amuse Bouche, Revana Family, Jones Family Vineyards, Barbour Vineyards, Paradigm Winery, and Lamborn Family. Past clients include Screaming Eagle, Showket Vineyards, Grace Family, Vineyard 29, and Hartwell/Grace Vineyards. Heidi is on Parker`s wine heroines list of 1998 (one of two from the US). Parker has dubbed her the "first lady of wine" and TIME Magazine named her "The Wine Diva of Napa “.

This Revana Cabernet Sauvignon is a great example of the 2003 vintage showing off ripe black cherry and cassis aromas. The purity of fruit is very enticing, with underlying layers of smoky, toasted French oak that add an accent of complexity. Round and rich in the mouth with gobs of fruit, silky tannins, wonderful structure and length. The flavors last a long time on the palate. The 2003 is consistent from start to finish with wonderful symmetry between nose and palate. Truly a delightful wine!

3 ROSES!!!! FROM THREE REGIONS OF FRANCE; Burgundy, Tavel, and Provence.

Do not confuse these wines with sickening White Zinfandel or Tutti Frutti candy wines. These are serious, dry Roses that are drunk in the spring and summer. They are incredible with grilled shrimp, lobster, peppers, zucchini, eggplant with or without cheese. They are also great with light pastas such as Penne A la Vodka or Linguini with Clams. They are meant to be drunk young and fresh. They are inexpensive and a big hit with anyone willing to get rid of their preconceptions. They are all made from red wine grapes where the juice is separated from the skin early in fermentation. That's why they are pink. The three we will drink come compliments of the Winehouse on Cotner Ave in West Los Angeles. With the Winehouse codes listed they are:

  • (760002) 2007 Chateau Saint Pierre, Rose de Provence (Grenache and Cinsalt grape blend) $13.99
  • (402102) 2007 Domaine la Rocaliere, Tavel Rose (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre grape blend) $14.99
  • (806501) 2005 Joseph Roty, Marsannay Rose ( 100% Pinot Noir ) $24.99
